We were inspired to create this charity fundraiser after watching the documentary, Living On One Dollar. We were then further inspired by Factfulness by Hans Rosling — a book about extreme poverty in the world. There was one specific line that stood out: ‘Approximately 1 billion people in the world live on less than one dollar a day’. As professionals in the tech industry, we live in a very different world. We take much for granted.
While we want to raise awareness of the issues. We chose, instead, to focus on highlighting how a small donation (by you) can make a big difference for people less fortunate than you. We’ll leave the education piece to the experts:
Learn about UNICEFThe idea is simple. Enter your city and how many drinks you buy on an average night out. We then cross-check your city with the average local cost of a beer, and calculate the cost of your night out equivalent to X number of days based on the international poverty line.
We chose UNICEF as our beneficiary charity because of the great work they are doing.
Make a donationUNICEF works in 190 countries and territories to save children’s lives, to defend their rights, and to help them fulfil their potential, from early childhood through adolescence. And we never give up.
Learn more about UNICEFWe work in tech. We want to use our skills for good. Instead of Going Out was founded by Ben Glatt, a Strategy and Sales Operations, Senior Associate at Google in San Francisco. The design and front-end build was by Andrew Couldwell, a British freelance web designer & developer based in Winter Park, Florida.
Instead of Going Out is an independent project. It has no official affiliation with UNICEF. It is a fundraiser to support their great work.
